Change happens. We can’t get around it. But when it comes to your skin, some fantastic treatments can bring your skin back to life. One of the most trusted is the Juvederm family of injectable fillers.
Why Juvederm Works So Well
Age, weight loss, or certain medical conditions can bring unwanted changes to your skin. Whatever the cause, the loss of hyaluronic acid and collagen will make your skin lose its structure and volume.
It’s easiest to see these effects in the fat pads in your face like your cheeks. If there’s one place you want to have fat, it’s there. But when you lose hyaluronic acid and collagen, no more soft, plump cheeks.
So, What’s The Solution?
Add back the structure, increase the hyaluronic acid, and jumpstart collagen production! Enter Juvederm!
Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen production. Collagen plumps up the skin. You get your smooth, supple skin back!
Here’s How It Works
Juvederm is an injectable hyaluronic acid dermal filler. When you get a Juvederm treatment, we use a syringe to inject a pre-determined amount of gel into target areas.
When we inject the gel, it adds volume under the skin, effectively filling it out. The hyaluronic acid in the gel holds water at the injection site, which creates a nice cushion.
The acid also encourages collagen production, which gives your skin a boost! The gel eventually dissipates, and your body absorbs it.
The new connective tissue the collagen creates will stay for a while. After about 9-12 months, you will need to get more injections to continue to enjoy the results.
What Areas Does Juvederm Correct?
The FDA approved Juvederm to correct:
- Nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth)
- Lip augmentation
- Fine lines
- Concave cheeks
- Scars
Introducing the Juvederm Family
You may have noticed there are different kinds of Juvederm. That’s because Juvederm is the family brand name, and each member of the family has its specific uses.
You don’t need to know the differences between them all. We know the one that is right for your needs, but here’s a quick breakdown.
- Voluma XC adds volume to increase the size of the cheeks.
- XC and Vollure XC increase skin elasticity and fill out smile lines.
- Ultra XC and Volbella XC enhance lips (nonsurgical treatment).
What Can You Expect?
Let’s talk about expectations before, during, and after treatment.
Before Treatment
The first step is to make an appointment for a consultation! Before you go to the consultation, it’s a good idea to get clear on your motivations and cosmetic goals. Your preparations will save time when you arrive at the office.
To help prevent bruising, avoid:
- Drinking alcohol in the weeks before the appointment
- Smoking, if possible.
- Medication like aspirin, ibuprofen, and St. John’s wort just before the appointment
Many times you can get your first round of fillers at the consultation! But first, we will discuss your goals and concerns. Also, be sure to tell us about any allergies or sensitivities.
During Treatment
After getting a better understanding of your desired results, we will determine your needs and target areas’ best fillers. We will inject Juvederm into the targeted areas. Then, we will give the area a light massage to distribute the filler and reduce the chance of swelling. The entire procedure only takes between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on how many injections you get.
If you are concerned about pain, don’t worry! Most Juvederm injections contain a small amount of lidocaine. Lidocaine minimizes pain and discomfort during treatment.
Results are immediate, so you and your friends may notice changes right away!
After Treatment
After your appointment, you can head back to your normal life. Still, it’s advisable to avoid the following for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
- Sun exposure
- Strenuous activity
- Wearing makeup
- Consuming alcohol
Let’s Talk Side Effects
As with all medical procedures, there are side effects associated with Juvederm injections. You can expect a small amount of swelling and bruising.
You may also experience some tenderness, redness, itching, minor pain, or lumps or bumps. These side effects should pass within two to four weeks.
Some more serious side effects can occur with unprofessional handling. These complications can include vision abnormalities, permanent scarring, blindness, or stroke.
That’s why you must select a licensed provider, such as us, who has been trained and has experience administering Juvederm dermal fillers.
Most Everyone Can Use Juvederm
Most adults are candidates for Juvederm injections. There are, however, some exceptions. Juvederm is a no-go for patients with:
- Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or a history or presence of multiple severe allergies.
- A history of allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins.
- A history of allergies to lidocaine (Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC only)
Other Considerations
Inform us before getting treatment if you use substances that may prolong bleeding or bruising, such as:
Expect inflammation if you get laser treatment, chemical peeling, or any other dermal procedure performed after Juvederm treatment on the same treatment site. There is an increased risk of infection if you are on immunosuppressive therapy.
Safety for use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years has not been established. Safety in patients with excessive scarring (e.g., hypertrophic scarring or keloid formation) and pigmentation disorders has not been studied.
