What Is Restylane?

Restylane is a brand of injection-based facial fillers used to smooth wrinkles. Restylane is made of Hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the connective tissue of your skin.

How Does Restylane Work?

When injected, Restylane increases the volume underneath your skin, where you’ve lost collagen or other tissue. This smoothes the skin out and gives it a gentle lift.

It works because:

The hyaluronic acid in Restylane clings to your skin.
It contains water, which provides volume.
It attracts water, which helps preserve the volume boost.

What Is Involved in a Restylane Treatment?

This simple cosmetic procedure can be done right in your doctor’s office. Although it involves no incisions, it is usually accompanied by local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort you might experience.

Treatment sessions follow the same basic course:

After discussing your goals and desired results with you, your provider chooses one or more injection sites in the treatment areas.
Your provider decides how much Restylane is needed to achieve results.
Your provider cleans these target areas with antiseptic.
Using an ultra-fine needle, your provider injects the Restylane under your skin into the targeted areas.

How Long Will the Treatment Take?

A treatment can take a few minutes to a half-hour, depending on how much work you’re having done. You can return to work after the procedure, but you may choose to give yourself a day to recover if you have several injections at once.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

After the treatment, you can expect some swelling, redness, or bruising that should dissipate within a week. Healing time varies with each individual and depends on how many injections you received and where they were made.

Limiting your sun exposure afterward will prevent added swelling or bruising. Once you are fully healed, you don’t have to alter your activities in any way.

When Can I Expect Results?

You can see the effects immediately. You should see full results within a week after the procedure.

How Long Will Results Last?

Restylane injections aren’t permanent. Restylane fillers last anywhere between 6 and 18 months, depending on the product type. If you want to maintain results, you will need to get more injections.

What Should I Do to Prepare for Treatment?

If you want to minimize bruising stop taking the following medicines and supplements about two weeks before your appointment:

vitamin E
aspirin
ibuprofen (Motrin)
fish oil
John’s wort

You can also minimize bruising and swelling by taking arnica before and after the procedure. You can find arnica over the counter at drugstores or health food stores.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

All procedures carry potential risks or side effects. Risks associated with Restylane treatments include:

infection
bruising or bleeding at the injection site
allergic reaction
irregularities in the firmness of your skin

Side effects from Restylane injections can include:

swelling
pain or itching at the injection site
bruising
tenderness
headache

Side effects typically resolve in 7 to 18 days, depending on the treatment area. If you’ve experienced severe side effects from any medications or drugs, talk with your doctor before getting a Restylane treatment.

Can Everyone Get Treatments?

Restylane is an FDA-approved non-invasive injectable that is safe for most people. As with all products, however, certain people should avoid using Restylane. You should avoid Restylane if you:

Have an allergy to bacterial protein
Are immunocompromised
Take blood thinners
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Are under age 21

Providers do not typically recommend products like Restylane for individuals on blood-thinning medications.

How Much Does It Cost?

Providers sell Restylane treatments by the syringe. The average cost of a syringe of Restylane is $275. Your treatment cost will vary based on what you’re having done and how many syringes are needed.

You can expect most procedures to cost between $275 and $700. Since Restylane injections are a cosmetic procedure, traditional health insurance companies do not cover them.

If money is an issue, check with your provider to see if they offer financing plans or will allow you to pay in installments.
