Is Laser Hair Removal right for me?

Nearly anyone with undesirable facial or body hair is a candidate for laser hair removal at Neighborhood Wellness Clinic & Medical Spa. Is your hair brown or darker? White, silver, blond or red hair cannot be effectively treated by laser hair removal since they do not have a dark enough pigment for the laser to ‘see’ the hair follicle. To personalize a treatment plan, your provider examines your unwanted hair, reviews your medical history, and discusses your desired results. Some medical conditions may limit the effectiveness of Laser Hair Removal.

How to prepare
To prepare for your session, steer clear of hair-removal solutions for several weeks. Shaving is fine, but tweezing, plucking, epilation, or waxing are not okay 3-4 weeks prior to your laser hair removal appointment. Your provider might ask you to shave the area to be treated the day before your appointment. Avoid any sun exposure, sunless tanning lotions, or tanning beds at least 2 weeks prior to your visit and always protect your skin from the sun with sunscreen.

What happens during Laser Hair Removal?

Your laser hair removal specialist will discuss your current medications and any recent sun exposure prior to your session.

During treatment you will wear eye protection to shield your eyes from the laser. Each session can last 15-120 minutes, depending on the size of the areas treated.

The Neighborhood Wellness Clinic & Medical Spa team emits laser energy into targeted hair follicles to heat and destroy them, reducing the chance of hair regrowth. You might feel a rubber band snapping sensation as the energy hits your skin. After your session, your skin may be slightly red and swollen. These side effects disappear soon after treatment.

We recommend you protect your skin from the sun and heat after your session, and always recommend using sunscreen.

Laser hair removal is a process

Laser hair removal is a process. Though you will see results after one treatment, best results are achieved through multiple consistent treatments, usually starting with 6 sessions but depending on the thickness of the hair being treated. Hair grows in stages, and only hairs in the ‘growth phase’ can be treated effectively.

Over time, treated hair begins to fall out and appear thinner or finer.

FAQ

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is typically described as long-term hair reduction. Many people need multiple sessions initially, and some may choose maintenance treatments depending on the area and hair cycle.

How many sessions will I need?

Many patients begin with a series (often around 6 sessions), but the exact number depends on the area, hair thickness, and growth cycle—only hairs in the growth phase respond best.

Does it work on blonde, red, gray, or white hair?

Laser hair removal works best on darker hair because the laser targets pigment in the follicle. White, silver, blonde, or red hair may not respond well.

What should I avoid before my appointment?

Avoid waxing, tweezing, plucking, epilation, and tanning before treatment. Shaving is typically fine. Your provider may ask you to shave the day before.

What does it feel like?

Many people describe a quick “rubber band snap” sensation. Some redness or mild swelling can occur after treatment and typically resolves soon.
